Why study the Yoga Sutras now?
• The yoga sutras of Patanjali offer clear and practical tools for working with the mind, overcoming obstacles to meditation, and developing deeper awareness in yoga practice.
• Yoga philosophy is meant to be applied, recited, remembered, contemplated, and revisited throughout life. Like asana, the sutras become more accessible when we return to them again and again. Contemplation is practice.
• Studying in community brings the teachings alive through shared experience, discussion, Sanskrit study, and the empowerment of chanting together.
Together we will :
• study the key sutras that illuminate Ashtanga Yoga philosophy and practice, and memorize selected passages
• practice Sanskrit pronunciation through chanting
• explore the coiling wisdom traditions woven through the text (Sankhya, Vedanta, Tantra, Buddhism)
• connect the teachings with real life
• receive handouts + recordings for continued study
This series is beginner friendly and also a perfect refresher for experienced practitioners wanting to reconnect with the underlying philosophy of yoga practice.
No dogma. Yes open-hearted discussion.
